Brits find tradespeople online, move away from directories

Friday, 10 December 2010 2:28 PM

Brits are increasingly avoiding paper-based directories when looking for tradespeople, choosing to search online instead.

Research for www.localtraders.com found more than 60% of people use online services to find homefixer help, and as many as 80% won’t use a paper-based phone directory at all to aide their search.

The survey of 2000 Brits also found only 45% of people surveyed use recommendations from friends and family when looking for a tradesperson.

“The trend for choosing online services to find tradespeople is only likely to continue,” said Localtraders.com managing director Craig Powell.

“Young people who use the internet so much as a part of their daily life will soon become first-time buyers and set up their own homes.”

Mr Powell said he was surprised that less than half of respondents are finding tradespeople through friend and family recommendations, but said this is likely to result from the busy lifestyles many people now lead.
