Redecorate your home without spending a fortune

Wednesday, 4 July 2012 9:57 AM

Redecorating is something many people long to do, as it enables you to spruce up your home and add a new lease of life to your furnishings. While you might be put off by the cost of renovating, you needn't be - here are some tips on improving your property without breaking the bank.

Small changes

One of the best ways to change your home is to make alterations to the small details. While swapping your lamp shades might not feel like it'll make a huge difference, you will certainly notice the change if the rooms feel brighter or more spacious as a result.

Door handles are some of the easiest items to change, as you can swap your levers without any fuss. You might simply wish to pick ones that better complement your current taste, or you could look for handles that suit your property more - for example, you could opt for brass levers if you have highlighted other period features in a Victorian house.

Alternatively, homeowners with modern flats or houses could benefit from fitting squiggle door handles. If you're looking to make big changes to your home with small features, choose ones that will have an impact, such as these wave-shaped levers. Their unique style shows you have given a lot of thought to the details in your rooms and will emphasise the contemporary feel to your property.

Lick of paint

Another way to easily redecorate your home is to give it a new lick of paint. You don't need to change all your furniture, swap your doors and install new fittings for your rooms to look different, as having a different colour on the walls can have a huge effect.

Putting a splash of light blue paint on magnolia walls will certainly give your hallway more character, while something deeper such as purple or red will add warmth to a room. You could also have a feature wall in a strong shade, leaving the other walls in a more neutral colour. This will be striking and draw people's attention to a certain area of the room.

Moving furniture around

This might sound a bit too simple, but sometimes it can be as easy as moving the furniture around a room - or even between rooms - that makes a big difference to how the space looks.

You might have always had the couch against the back wall of your living room, for instance, but if you move it to a more central location, you could make the most of the area behind the sofa. Alternatively, you could move your bed so it rests against a different wall in your bedroom, making it feel as though you have made substantial changes.

Don't forget that you can swap furniture between rooms - you could move your dining table and chairs to the conservatory, for example. Or, you may prefer having your desk and book shelves in the sitting room, as opposed to your spare bedroom. These changes will enable you to make the most of the space you have freed up, while you could find that they allow you to run a more efficient household!

Adding small items of furniture will also bring your room to life. Scatter some pretty cushions on your armchair and swap your curtains for something brighter and more eye-catching. By buying pieces like small footstools and stylish lamps, you give your room a new character without having to spend a fortune.
