New survey reveals strength of DIY market

Friday, 4 March 2011 11:58 PM

A new study from Tradessupermarket.com has revealed that the UK building materials and DIY markets have remained strong in spite of a decline in consumer spending power and the onset of the economic crisis.

In January, the average UK household had just £174 a week of flexible income, a fall of £9 per week and the largest decline since 2007.

While these figures represent a significant drop in family spending power, the shopping comparison website for tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts has recorded strong sales of home improvement materials and DIY products.

TV favourite and Trades Supermaket brand ambassador Tommy Walsh, said: "The last few years have been tough on families and so more and more people have been telling me that they're now choosing to do their own DIY instead of calling in the professionals.”

"At Trades Supermarket we have everything from Sanders and saws to taps and lamps from big name merchants to independents, all available to search at the click of a button."
