Things to think about when refurbishing your kitchen

Thursday, 12 January 2012 6:29 PM

You don't need to be an aficionado of television property programmes to realise the kitchen is the most important room in the house. As such, you are sure to want to make certain it is both stylish and practical enough to cope with the wear and tear of everyday use.

When refurbishing a room you regard as the heart of the home it is crucial you plan the project carefully. There are lots of issues to consider, from space to the type of kitchen appliances for sale you require, and you must ensure all your choices can be combined into a single design scheme.

A good starting point is to think about what you wish to use the kitchen for. Some people see it as purely a practical space for food preparation, while many also use it for dining and some as the main family room in the home. To some extent this will depend on how large your kitchen is and whether it is a separate room or part of an open-plan arrangement.

Once you have worked this out, you can start to look at what type of work surfaces, appliances, sink area and furniture you need. It is also at this point that you can give some consideration to style. Whether you have a galley, a kitchen-diner or a country-style room, you will want to choose a design scheme that will influence all your other selections.

If you have a house built in the last 20 years or a modern apartment, you are likely to want to achieve a contemporary look, with metal and granite featuring prominently. For a traditional cottage or barn conversion, you may prefer a more old-fashioned feel with lots of wood on show. Remember, it is possible to change the appearance of basic units with a few simple touches, such as period or modern handles and backplates.

While the way units look is sure to be important to you, make sure you also consider practical issues when you choose them. Their primary purpose is storage and there are a number of ways you can improve this. Adding a kitchen pullout, such as a corner carousel, basket that slides out from a cupboard or racks fitted to the interior of the unit's door can create valuable extra space for food, cleaning products, and pots and pans.

Another important decision to make is the sink area. There is a surprisingly wide range of kitchen sinks on the market, with everything from ceramic double bowl models and stainless steel corner units to undermount versions and ones that come with large draining areas.

Personal taste is sure to be a major factor in your final choice, as is the space you have available. If you do not have much room left, a compact kitchen sink may be a practical option. You may also wish to think about this kind of small model if you already have a sink area in the utility room.

Of course, the major purchases you make when you carry out a kitchen refurbishment are likely to be the appliances. The range of hobs, ovens and cookers on the market means you are certain to be able to find something that suits both your design scheme and budget, however much space you have available for this crucial piece of equipment.
